Relief To Indian Students, US Court Reinstates 133 Student Visas

A court in Georgia, United States, has temporarily reinstated SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) records for 133 international students, most of whom are Indian. This decision comes as a big relief for those Indians whose student visas were earlier canceled by the US Department of State (DOS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

This led them to approach the court. The students complained that the Donald Trump-led US government unfairly ended their student status by removing their records from SEVIS, which is a system used by schools to report international students’ information to the government. The lawsuit also stated that some of the students had minor issues with law enforcement officials, but none of them had a criminal conviction. On April 18, the federal court issued a temporary restraining order, asking the government to restore the students’ status by April 22. The next court hearing is expected soon.

According to reports, ICE terminated the SEVIS records of more than 4,736 international students since January 20, 2025. Most of them are Indians. Other targeted students were from China, Bangladesh, Nepal, and South Korea. In most of these cases, Trump’s government cited petty reasons like traffic tickets or violations of university regulations to target students.
