The Donald Trump administration is taking audacious decisions on almost a daily basis and it has not reached a point where Trump has started to threaten even individual companies with tariff increases.
Incidentally, Trump has threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Apple if they continue with their plan to manufacture their phones in India.
“I have long ago informed Tim Cook of Apple that I expect their iPhone’s that will be sold in the United States of America will be manufactured and built in the United States, not India, or anyplace else. If that is not the case, a Tariff of at least 25% must be paid by Apple to the US. Thank your for your attention to this matter!” Trump stated.
This comes early after Trump had recently commented in a public forum that Apple must stop manufacturing plans in India and instead shift to the United States. However, Apple did not look to bothered about this statement as they reassured India that they would be certainly going ahead with their plans to set up manufacturing hubs in India.
Primarily, Apple decided to move out of China and gradually towards India due to the heated tariff battle between the United States and China. This is one of the principal reasons why they decided to upscale their facilities in India.
However, Donald Trump being the wild individual that he is, has now threatened to impose additional 25% tariff on Apple if they don’t stop their plans in India. This has resulted in a market share collapse of 3.5% for Apple in the pre-market trading.
But it is yet to be established if president Trump has the authority to impose such tariffs on individual companies at his will.
