In a video message played across naturalization ceremonies across the US, President Donald Trump urged the newly naturalized citizens to consider US citizenship as a ‘sacred honor’ and ‘fiercely guard’ the American way of life. The message was delivered by Trump on June 10, which was released by The White House.
He reminds the new citizens that US citizenship is a matter of pride and ‘comes with the highest responsibility’. He describes US citizenship as ‘one of the most priceless gifts ever granted by human hands’ and asks them to ‘fiercely guard this magnificent inheritance and uphold its values’. Immigrants will become US citizens after meeting legal requirements such as lawful residency, English proficiency and allegiance to the US Constitution.
Significantly, the video emphasizes that immigrants should celebrate the achievement of US citizenship, in the wake of the strict immigration policies enacted in the recent past. Trump asks new Americans to cherish and also fight for preserving the country’s founding ideals, underscoring patriotism and cultural assimilation as core pillars of US citizenship. He said that their citizenship demands loyalty and love for the United States.
