Two Minnesota lawmakers were shot early Saturday morning, and police officials assume that it is a premeditated attack. The shootings took place at the lawmakers’ homes in the suburban areas of Champlin and Brooklyn Park.
Senator John Hoffman sustained injuries, but Melissa Hortman and her husband were fatally shot. The police believe the suspect may have posed as a police officer to gain access to their residences. The efforts are underway to locate and apprehend the suspect.
John Hoffman, who survived the attack, has served in the Minnesota Senate since 2012. He also runs a consulting firm and has previously served as vice chair of the Anoka-Hennepin School Board. Melissa Hortman is a prominent Democratic lawmaker since 2004. She was widely respected for her leadership in the Minnesota House.
US President Donald Trump condemned the shootings as “terrible” and pledged that such violence would not be tolerated.
