For long, the America and London have been the dream destinations for ambitious youth, belonging to the middle-class, from India. After the ascent of Donald Trump as the President of the US, the dreams are slowly but surely shattering. Now, the UK is also tightening its visa and immigration policies, tearing down the hopes of Indian youth, who witnessed greener pastures in the developed nation.
According to the official sources, UK is also witnessing a sharp decline in the number of applications from Indian students and workers.
Officials Statistics
It is quite evident in the official statistics. According to the UK Home Office data, in 2023, Indian nationals had the major portion of the UK work visas, accounting to 162,655 visas but in 2024, it has dropped to half the number, with only 81,463 visas issued to Indians.
The decline was particularly evident in the Health and Care Worker category, which once provided the route for thousands of Indian families to settle in the UK. The number of applications through this gateway was at 18,300 in August 2023 but it dropped to just 1,300 in July 2025. The drop in the number of visa applications is mainly due to tighter scrutiny of employers, ban on overseas recruitment of new care workers from July this year, and several restrictions on the dependents. The Skilled Worker visa, professional work visas and the number of Indian students enrolling in the UK universities have also reduced in the recent times.
In 2023, 159,371 Indian students were granted study visas but by 2024, the number dwindled to 92,355, which means a 42% fall. India ranks second only to China in terms of study visa recipients. The immigration curbs dealt a severe blow on the dependents. From January 2024, many students, barring research scholars and those on government-funded programme, were barred from bringing dependents, resulting in a 86% drop on the dependent applications between December 2023 and July 2025.
Policy Shift
The drop in numbers is mainly due to the policy shift. The UK government’s “Restoring Control over the Immigration System” White Paper released in May 2025, has significantly reshaped entry routes. Apart from the salary threshold hike and care worker restrictions, the rules also raised the skill level requirement for visas to RQF level 6 and above, pushing out a large number of mid-level professionals.
The tightening of visa issuance for dependents reflects the government’s broader pledge to bring down net migration. The fallout was evident in the British universities and workplaces, which were known for their diversity and global talent.
New Destinations
With the US and UK limiting the entry of international students and workers and increasing scrutiny on the visa applications, apart from placing caps on certain categories of employment, the global education and migration map is being redrawn. Canada and Australia are trying to lure Indian students and workers and emerge as the new hubs for Indian talent. Australia has streamlined visa categories to attract skilled workers, specially in the STEM fields. For the Indian youth, the shift in the usual pathway could mean searching for new avenues elsewhere in the world or reinvent themselves to create opportunities within the country, and learn to evolve and realise their dreams.
