Viral Video: After Protests, Gen Z Sweeps Nepal Clean

The Gen Z activists, who are considered to be lacking determination and patience, had led to the collapse of the government in Nepal, through their relentless protests.

The activists forced the resignation of prime minister KP Sharma Oli. After the fiery protests and stone pelting that left the capital city littered, the volunteers took up brooms and water pipes to clean the premises. They displayed social responsibility by replacing the riot gear with brooms and brushes. Several videos are in circulation on the social media showing the young volunteers repairing broken tiles and also clearing the trash from the public spaces.

With bags and dustbins, the youth swept the streets and pavements, collected debris, cleaned up the walls near the government buildings that were torched during the protests, leaving them scarred, and repainted them. A few of the protesters even returned goods like refrigerators, microwaves and fans looted during the agitation.

Hundreds of Gen Z volunteers hit the roads early in the morning and gathered at the Parliament premises in Kathmandu, in response to the call of the local community leaders and student groups on social media. Carrying brooms and shovels, they cleaned up glass pieces lying scattered on the roads, moved away burnt furniture and swept up the debris.

The unrest began as youth launched protests against government corruption and social injustice. Social media ban aggravated the simmering anger among the youth. They considered the ban as a direct attack on their freedom of expression and things escalated into violent clashes between the Gen Z activists and the police, leading to the death of as many as 51 people.

After the storm comes the calm. Similarly, after unleashing violence and destruction, the youth restored what was damaged in their anger.

Reportedly, some security forces also assisted the youth in the restoration process.

Amidst the protests and cleaning up, former chief justice Sushila Karki was sworn in as Nepal’s interim Prime Minister.
