An Indian-origin man, Varun Suresh, was charged with murder on Tuesday for stabbing a registered sex offender to death in Fremont, California, last week. Twentynine-year-old Suresh, a resident of Fremont, was detained at the scene of crime and a knife was recovered from him. He was arrested on suspicion of killing David Brimmer, 71. This is the city’s fifth homicide this year.
The police said that they received a call around 12.01 pm on September 18 to rush to Upper Vintners Circle after reports of a violent argument. On arrival, police found Brimmer collapsed with severe stab wounds. Despite administering trauma care, Brimmer remained unresponsive and declared dead at the scene.
The court documents read that Suresh used the publicly accessible Megan’s Law database of sex offenders to target Brimmer, who had been in prison for nine years after being convicted of sexual assault on a minor. Brimmer had no personal connection with Suresh prior to the attack, police said.
According to the police, Suresh approached the victim’s house posing as a certified public accountant or auditor. Sensing trouble, Brimmer took to his heels but Suresh chased him for two blocks into a neighbour’s garage and kitchen, where he allegedly stabbed him in the neck, asking him to “repent”. Brimmer tried to crawl but Suresh cut his throat.
Suresh admitted that he selected Brimmer because of his age and vulnerability and told the interrogation team that killing was “honestly really fun”. “I don’t like paedophiles. They deserve to die,” Suresh added.
He told police that he never tried to escape and added that he himself would have called them, had they not arrived.
Along with charges of murder, the police also included residential burglary and being armed with a deadly weapon causing great bodily injury. Suresh has a prior criminal history. In 2021, the Fremont police arrested him for burglary, making a false bomb threat, as well as criminal threats. Suresh is facing another case with Walnut Creek police.
