Indians in Mexico Advised to Stay Indoors, What’s Happening?

The Indian Embassy in Mexico issued an advisory to our citizens to restrict movement and take shelter immediately after widespread protests and unabated violence erupted all over the country following the killing of infamous drug lord Nemesio Oseguera, who is popularly known as El Mencho, during a military operation.

The notorious drug cartel mastermind was killed by Mexican authorities in Jalisco in a blistering raid on Sunday. As soon as the news spread, several criminal groups resorted to violence by blocking highways, burning vehicles and attacking gunmen. The situation turned from bad to worse in no time and the government has heightened security to clamp down the criminal activity.

El Mencho was the leader of Jalisco New Generation Cartel or CJNG, the criminal group which runs the illicit drug trafficking activity to various countries including the USA. There has been a lot of pressure from Donald Trump’s adminstration on Mexico to arrest the drug lord and ramp up the crackdown on the drug menace.

Amid mounting threats from Trump, Mexico has launched a military operation to arrest El Mencho. In this process, he was injured and later declared dead on his way to hospital. The killing of El Mencho is perceived as a major victory for Mexico against the drug cartels that are responsible for smuggling billions of dollars earned through trafficking cocaine and fentanyl into the USA.

More than half a dozen states in Mexico are currently reeling under a wave of protests that are led by large criminal groups. The government has deployed more military personnel to bring the situation under control.

El Mencho had been associated with drug trafficking since the 90s. He had migrated to the US during his young age and had been convicted in numerous cases over illegal distribution of drugs before getting deported back to Mexico where he resumed the trafficking activity.
