Till a couple of years ago, Australia was the next favourite destination for Indian students who could not secure the United States visas. And even in general terms, Australia used to do invite a significant number of Indian students, annually.
But the trend has been changing over the last couple of years as Australia had become a tough to crack for the Indian visa aspirants. And things have taken a term now as Australia is reportedly, rejecting 40% of Indian student visa applicants.
Australia has reclassified India, Nepal & Bangladesh as Evidence Level 3, the highest risk tier under its Simplified Student Visa Framework since Jan 2026.
This would essentially mean that Australia is seeing students from these three countries as high risk entities who are using all kinds of measures to migrate to their country.
This is also a part of Australia’s ongoing fight against mass immigration as the country is not welcoming net migration of non-genius Visa categories. So this is going to be a part of the larger crackdown that can have pretty strong consequences.
Considering the fact that Australia is already cutting down on the visa acceptance by nearly 40%, it has to be seen where this final tally would end up. This would also mean that Indian students who are already struggling with the restrictions in the United States could face further troubles in Australia as well.
It is already known that Australia had recently tighten the permanent residency prospect as well. And now we have the case of this restriction on student visa, which would further mean that the country is not welcoming international immigration.
