Trump’s New Proposal: Indians In Danger Again ?

US president Donald Trump seems to be hellbent on making life difficult for foreign nationals with his stringent immigration policies. After proposing exorbitant fees for H-1B Visas and strict process for acquiring Green Cards and other privileges, Trump’s administration is planning another shocking proposal that could put foreign students in big danger, if implemented.

As per the latest media reports in USA, Trump’s government is said to be considering proposal that would require international students to pay a $100,000 fee if they want to work in the United States after graduating this fee would apply to the Optional Practical Training program, which allows foreign students to gain work experience in their field of study.

Although the plan has not been officially announced, the report has already created widespread debate and worry among students across the globe. If this rule is introduced, majority of those impacted would be Indian students who form the majority of applicants among International students every year.

Every year, India sends more students to American universities than any other nation. Nearly 39 percent of these Indian students rely on post-graduation work opportunities through the training program. Adding a fee equal to nearly 95 lakh Indian rupees in addition to high tuition fees would crash the dreams of many middle and upper middle class students.

American colleges and technology companies could also face serious trouble if the proposal moves forward. Universities depend heavily on international students who pay full tuition fees to support their campuses and research programs

This news comes close on heels after Trump and his administration faced a big legal setback from federal appeals in Boston court over his proposed $ 1,00,000 fee for H-1B applications. This move has already received huge criticism from all quarters, including MNCs as it could deny employment to professionals from other countries.

Trump’s office is yet to respond on these reports. So, it is unclear if the administration is really considering such a proposal or not. Moreover, such a proposal is further likely to face judicial scrutiny for sure once it is officially approved.
