Telugu Girl from IIT Drowns in Brahmaputra River

What was supposed to be a refreshing walk turned fatal for a Telugu girl, who is pursuing her second year in IIT Guwahati campus as she drowned in the Brahmaputra River. The deceased has been identified as 20-year-old Chetana, a BTech student studying Electronics and Electrical Engineering at IIT Guwahati. She was the only daughter of K. Sainath Reddy, who serves as the Tahsildar of Jammalamadugu in Kadapa district, Andhra Pradesh.

The victim and a fellow student were visiting the riverbank outside the campus premises when both accidentally slipped into the deep, fast-flowing water. Local police and rescue teams were immediately alerted to begin a search operation.

Witnesses who saw the accident quickly raised an alarm to get help from nearby locals and authorities. Emergency teams, including personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), arrived swiftly at the site.

Rescue workers managed to pull one of the students out of the water within ten minutes. However, Chetana was swept away by the strong currents. After an intensive three-hour search, divers recovered her body from the river.

Assam has recently experienced huge rains and many areas are flooded due to overflow of Brahmaputra. Locals claimed that Chetana could not be immediately rescued due to the heavy flow.

The news of Chetana’s death has brought deep shock and sorrow to the IIT Guwahati campus community. Her family members were informed right away and have left Andhra Pradesh for Assam to complete the necessary formalities and bring her body home.
