New Zealand is changing its Parent Resident Visa system from October 5 2026. The change could be important for Indians living in New Zealand who want to bring their parents there.
90% Will Follow the Queue
Under the new system 90% of places will be given based on when the application was submitted. This means people who have been waiting longer will get priority.
10% Through Ballot
The remaining 10% of places will still be selected through a ballot. So people who are not near the front of the queue will still have a chance.
Good News for Existing Applicants
Existing Expressions of Interest will no longer expire. This means applicants will not have to submit a new EOI again just because the old one has expired.
2,500 Places Every Year
New Zealand will still have a limit of 2,500 Parent Resident Visas each year. So the new system does not mean every applicant will automatically get a visa.
Why It Matters to Indians
For many Indian families living in New Zealand bringing parents over is a major priority. The new system could make the process more predictable for those who have already been waiting.
However applicants will still have to meet the required eligibility and sponsorship conditions.
