Donald Trump seems to be ready to move heaven and earth in order to make life difficult for immigrants staying in USA. Especially, professionals with H-1B are having a nightmare due to the recent policies introduced by his administration.

After bringing several stringent reforms targeting the H-1B visa holders, a new rule is in proposal and if implemented it could make staying in the US even more difficult if an immigrant loses their job.

As per reliable reports, The US Department of Homeland Security is looking at a new measure that could remove the 60-day grace period for foreign workers. Right now, if a visa holder gets laid off, they get up to 60 days time to find a new job or change their visa status.

Usually, applicants switch to either student, tourist or dependent visas to make use of the buffer time and secure employment.

So, the new rule would likely force unemployed immigrants to leave the country with no breathing space and also with no chance to search for new employment.

Though the new proposal is not a law yet, it is currently being reviewed by the White House Office of Management and Budget. If the government approves the draft, it will be published for public comments for 30 to 60 days. The rule will only take effect after officials review the feedback and release a final version.

Official data shows that Indians received around 71 percent of all approved H-1B petitions in 2024. Because so many Indians rely on H-1B visas, losing the buffer time after a layoff could create serious panic.

As of now, Visa holders still have their legal window to look for work for 60 days after losing their current jobs. However, the proposed change shows that the US government is adopting a zero tolerance policy on foreign workers.
