Two Rutgers graduates from New Jersey were killed after being struck by a subway train in Manhattan early Sunday morning.
The incident happened around 3:15 AM when the two 24-year-olds were found on the tracks of a southbound No. 4 train. Emergency responders reached the spot and pronounced both of them dead.
The victims were identified as Malaika Chitre from South Brunswick and Navam Kaul from Sayreville. Both had studied at Rutgers University between 2020 and 2024.
According to an initial report, the pair were on the subway platform before they ended up on the tracks. It is still not clear who fell first. A video reportedly captured both of them on the tracks moments before the train arrived.
The police are investigating the incident and more details are expected to emerge.
Chitre had studied public health and was working with Acadia Pharmaceuticals in Princeton. Kaul had graduated from Princeton Business School and was working as a financial data analyst at Bloomberg.
Kaul was also a former student of Sayreville War Memorial High School. The sudden deaths of the two young graduates have shocked their families and local community.
