PM Modi To Attend The First-Ever In-Person Quad summit at the White House

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be part of the first in-person summit of the leaders of the “Quad” countries, to be held in the US. The countries include Australia, India, Japan and the United States and the summit will be hosted by President Joe Biden next week.

Modi will be accompanied by Prime Minister Scott Morrison of Australia, Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga of Japan and President Joe Biden of the USA for the summit in Washington on September 24. The Quad leaders will review the Vaccine initiative which was announced in March this year.

The summit will also be Prime Minister Modi’s first in-person meeting with US President Joe Biden. Earlier, the duo have met virtually on at least three occasions – the Quad summit in March, the climate change summit in April, and the G-7 summit in June this year.

They will also discuss contemporary global issues such as critical and emerging technologies. Apart from these, the Quad leaders are scheduled to review on connectivity and infrastructure, cyber security, maritime security, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, climate change and education.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki stated that hosting the Quad leaders demonstrates the Biden-Harris Administration’s priority of engaging in the Indo-Pacific, including through new multilateral configurations to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

On Sept 25, Modi is also scheduled to address the General Debate at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. And the theme for this year’s General Debate is ‘Building Resilience through hope to recover from COVID-19, rebuild sustainably, respond to the needs of the planet, respect the rights of people, and revitalise the United Nations.
