‘Konaseema’ Jilla: Amalapuram Is On Fire!

Tension prevailed in Amalapuram today evening as youth pelted stones at the policemen who caned them in a bid to prevent them from staging protests demanding that the name of their district, Konaseema, should not be tagged with Dr BR Ambedkar as proposed by the government.

Amalapuram is the headquarters of Konaseema district. It was carved out from East Godavari district. On May 18, a notification was issued inviting objections and suggestions regarding the proposal to change the name of Konaseema district.

Since then protests were staged demanding retention of the name. This morning, the Konaseema Sadhana Samiti activists planned a rally to the district collectorate and as a precautionary measure, the police imposed prohibitory orders under Section 30 of The Police Act and Section 144 of the CrPC.

Last evening, Konaseema SP K.S.S.V. Subba Reddy said that they would not allow processions and agitations in the district for the next two days.

Despite these orders and police restrictions, many youth took to the streets with a demand that Konaseema name should not be changed for their district. Soon police swung into action and caned them following which the youth hurled stones at the cops, resulting in a tense situation. The protesters even raised ”CM down…down” slogans.

Minister Pinipe Viswarup and YSRCP MLA Ponnada Satish house is burnt by protesters.
