The Supreme Court Of India recently ordered an immediate ban on electoral bonds which serve as anonymous donations to political parties. On top of that, the Court ordered SBI to present the complete details of the donations made to political parties through these bonds.
The biggest benefactor of the electoral bonds system is the BJP, which reportedly had 6060.50 cr encashment of bonds. The Congress party got 1421 crore rupees.
BRS stands as the 4th biggest benefactor of this seriously questionable donation program as the party received Rs 1,214 crore in electoral bonds.
YSR Congress made Rs 337 crores while its counterpart Telugu Desam made Rs 218 crores. Janasena Party received Rs 21 crores.
SBI didn’t submit the data between March 2018 – March 2019 and claimed the relevant data is missing. A total of Rs 2500 crores worth of bonds were sold during this period.
However, a total of 22,217 bonds were purchased between 1st April 2019 – 15th February, 2024.
