Trump Proving Lethal For American Democracy – Prof K Nageshwar

President of the United States (POTUS) Donald Trump bullied friends and foes alike. He picked up quarrels with western allies too. Despite calling India a friend, Trump withdrew preferential trade status to New Delhi. He threatened to retaliate if India does not export Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ). He made life miserable for Indian techies to find or retain jobs in the United States.

Trump imposed uncharitable trade restrictions on Indian steel, aluminium, etc. He tried to meddle in Kashmir. He dictated India’s foreign policy, especially regarding the relations with Iran. He wanted to scuttle Indo-Russian defence ties.

With his policy of America first, Trump threatened multilateralism. In a brazen bid to legitimize the Taliban, Trump broke a deal with the Islamic terrorist group with whom the United States fought a long and deadly war. Trump led the US withdrew from the World Health Organisation (WHO) amidst the raging pandemic. He dismantled the Obama era US-Iran nuclear deal. He walked out of the Paris climate deal. He still called India a country of filthy air. At IMF, he resisted efforts towards economic stimulus aimed at easing the external finances of developing nations. 

Thus, Trump proved to be dangerous to global order and the international architecture that sustains it. 

The self-proclaimed messiah of ‘America First,’ Trump presided over one of the worst public health crises in United States history. He rebuked scientific institutions, pooh-poohed scientific research, promoted unproven medical remedies.
International science journals like Nature, Scientific American, New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), over 80 noble prize-winning scientists called for Trump’s defeat. 

Trump declared himself elected much before the counting process concluded. He left no stone unturned to reshape the electoral process. Now he moves Supreme Court to win the elections in his favor. He ensured that the apex court has majority conservative judges. He deliberately weakened postal services to disrupt postal ballot, as majority of those who prefer such voting are democrat voters. 

He publicly encouraged people to disobey COVID-19 restrictions. Now, he does not even hesitate to incite violence in the street to remain in power. Thus, Trump proves to be a lethal threat to American democracy.
