The center has approved the second airport in Telangana in Warangal’s Mamnoor.
In a landmark move to strengthen regional connectivity in Telangana, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu gave a green light to the development of Mamnoor Airport in Warangal.
‘Warangal has immense potential to become a major regional hub. We are committed to ensuring this project moves swiftly, bringing new opportunities for trade, tourism, and local employment,’ Naidu said.
The state has already initiated land acquisition, allocating Rs 205 crores for 280.30 acres ensuring the airport can handle Airbus 320 and Boeing 737 category aircraft. The Mamnoor airport already has 696 acres of land.
State’s R&B Minister Komatireddy Venkata Reddy convinced the GMR group for NOC for the second airport within 150 km distance. The Warangal Airport was a non-starter due to the GMR that runs the Hyderabad Airport which had a clause in its agreement with the Government of India that there should be no airport within 150 km aerial distance from Hyderabad for 25 years from the beginning of its operations.
The airport will come up at the existing airstrip at Mamnoor. The Warangal Airport at Mamnoor was operational during Nizam’s rule and the airstrip was used during the Indo-China war.
