Congress Leader Fat-shames Rohit Sharma, Gets Trolled

Congress spokesperson Dr. Shama Mohamed has been the center of an unwanted controversy ever since she made derogatory posts against Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma. Dr. Shama took to her X account during the India vs New Zealand match on Sunday and called Rohit Sharma “fat for a sportsman” and the “most unimpressive captain in Indian cricket.”

Shama shared the now deleted controversial posts after Rohit was dismissed for 15 runs off 17 balls in the crucial match against the Kiwis in the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy. However, the way he led the team to successfully defend a small total of 249 and clinch victory earned him plaudits from fans across the country.

Shama’s insensitive remarks were questioned even by fans from India’s arch-rival Pakistan. When a Pakistani journalist responded to Shama’s post, calling Rohit Sharma a “world-class performer,” she countered him, questioning Rohit’s achievements in comparison to Team India’s legendary captains – Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli. “He is a mediocre captain as well as a mediocre player who got lucky to be the captain of India,” Shama added.

Quickly utilizing the opportunity, BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari condemned Sharma and the Congress party. “Shame on Congress! Now they are going after the Indian cricket captain! Do they expect Rahul Gandhi to now play cricket after failing in Indian politics?” he posted.

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia described Shama’s views on Rohit Sharma as “very unfortunate for a responsible person to pass such a trivial comment.” He went on to add, “The team is in the middle of a crucial tournament. It may have demoralizing effect on the team and players. Request not to make such comments.”

Meanwhile, the Congress party has distanced itself from Shama Mohamed’s comments and asked her to delete her posts. Senior Congress leader Pawan Khera stated, “Dr. Shama Mohamed made certain remarks about a cricketing legend that do not reflect the party’s position. She has been asked to delete the concerned social media posts from X and has been advised to exercise greater caution in the future.”
