The Chief Minister of Telangana, Revanth Reddy, is determined to bring several reformative changes to the general administration of the state. In this context, he is set to introduce not one, but two historic bills in the Assembly today. Here’s a look at them:
The first bill aims to legalize the SC categorization, and the other seeks to finalize and officiate the 42% reservation for the BC community.
Regarding the SC categorization bill, this bill aims to implement sub-categorization within the existing 15% reservation for Scheduled Castes (SCs) to ensure a more equitable distribution of benefits among various SC communities. The proposal is based on the recommendations of a one-man commission led by Justice Shameem Akhtar, which suggested dividing the 59 SC sub-castes into three groups: Group 1, Group 2, and Group 3.
The second proposal is for a 42% reservation for the BC community, which seeks to increase reservations for Backward Classes in education, employment, and local bodies from the current 29% to 42%. This initiative is based on the findings of the recent caste survey conducted by the state, which revealed that BCs constitute approximately 56.33% of Telangana’s population.
These are two historically significant bills that are going to be passed by the Revanth Reddy government in the Assembly, and there will be intense debate on the same. It has to be seen how the BRS and BJP will react to these bills once they are presented in the House.
