One of the many irregularities committed by the YS Jagan government during its previous tenure is the seemingly endless liquor scam. On one hand, the quality of liquor supply was questionable, and on the other, the government enforced cash-only transactions, leading to a massive lack of credibility and transparency.
Shortly after the NDA government took charge in Andhra Pradesh, an investigation was launched into this matter. The CID conducted searches at as many as 30 distilleries across the state, all of which had been operating since Jagan’s tenure. The former MD of AP Beverages Corporation, Vasudev Reddy, was also taken into custody.
Today, this burning issue was brought up for discussion in Parliament by TDP MP Lavu Sri Krishnadeva Rayulu. He made a series of strong remarks against Jagan and his infamous liquor scam.
The young TDP MP, who was with YCP until 2024, stated, “Jagan’s liquor scam is much bigger than the Delhi liquor scam. Jagan has the distinction of committing a scam even before liquor production began. Through his relative Sunil Reddy, ₹2,000 crore was transferred to Dubai. This amount was diverted in the name of an infrastructure company through Sunil Reddy.”
Lavu further added that new companies like Adan, Graysons, Leela, JR Associates, and PV Spirits—26 in total—made huge profits. Low-quality liquor was produced, ensuring that thousands of crores went to businesses affiliated with the ruling party. The state government has already ordered a CID inquiry into all these matters.
Since foreign transactions are also involved, Lavu urged the central government to bring in the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to investigate the scam.
Given that the NDA government in Andhra Pradesh shares a strong relationship with the central government, it remains to be seen whether they will succeed in initiating an ED investigation into this liquor scam. The fact that an MP raised this issue in Parliament highlights the seriousness of the matter and the potential repercussions it could lead to.
