A major fire broke out at the HPCL refinery in Visakhapatnam on Monday night, triggering panic among nearby residents. Flames rose high into the air as thick smoke spread across the surrounding areas.
The fire reportedly broke out in a pitch tank at the refinery’s Residue Upgradation Facility. Fire tenders were rushed to the spot, and firefighting teams immediately began efforts to control the blaze.
An HPCL official confirmed that no injuries or casualties had been reported so far. The thick smoke was attributed to the high viscosity of the material stored in the tank.
The extent of property damage is yet to be assessed, while the exact cause of the fire remains unclear. Reports of an explosion are also being examined as the situation develops.
