Legal Immunity: TDP Is Way Behind Than YCP

For any political party to gain legal immunity to a considerable degree, it needs to have a strong legal cell and coterie. In this regard, one would expect the Telugu Desam Party to have a solid legal foundation, given its longstanding relevance in Telugu state politics for the last four decades.

However, it appears that the legal coterie of YSR Congress Party is currently stronger than that of TDP.

This observation gained momentum when Chandrababu Naidu get arrested in September 2023 over a non-mainstream skill development case. Many were shocked to see an established party like TDP struggle for nearly two months to secure Naidu’s release. The process was long and challenging.

TDP supporters and activists had expected the party to strengthen its legal division once back in power in 2024. However, after assessing the situation post-election, even some TDP cadres have expressed disappointment with the party’s seemingly sluggish legal system.

In contrast, several YCP leaders, including Sajjala, Perni Nani, and currently, Peddireddy Midhun Reddy, have been able to secure legal immunity with relative ease.

For instance, today, Midhun Reddy, whose name emerged in the high-profile Andhra Pradesh liquor scam case, managed to secure a favorable verdict from the AP High Court. Reportedly, the court has ordered the CID not to take any action against Midhun until April 3, 2025, and has instructed the investigating authorities not to take any immediate strict actions.

Except for a few cases, like those involving Vallabhaneni Vamsi, Nandigam Suresh, and a few other smaller leaders, many of YCP’s prominent figures have been able to secure favorable terms in legal proceedings. This has led some neutral observers to comment that YCP’s legal framework appears to be functioning more efficiently than that of TDP, which raises questions among some of TDP’s supporters.

TDP supporters had hoped that the party would work on its legal cell and improve its prospects. However, many are now feeling disillusioned after witnessing the contrast in how legal matters are being handled, especially when comparing the party’s handling of high-profile cases.

At a time when Chandrababu Naidu himself was imprisoned for 53 days in connection with the skill development case, the quick resolutions for second-tier leaders in YCP have left many questioning the current state of the party’s legal system.
