NDA Confirms Caste Census: What Next?

The NDA led Central government has officially communicated that they are preparing to hold the population census across the country which has been due since 2021. Union minister, Ashwini Vaishnav briefed the Media on the topic and stated that the census will be completed by the time of coming elections. 

Incidentally, this census was supposed to happen in 2021 itself. But this was postponed indefinitely due to the Covid situation back then. And now the Indian government has proposed to hold both population census and also caste census together. 

It must be primarily noted that the Telangana government had already done the caste census in the state. This was upon the insistence of Rahul Gandhi and Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy.

Now that the central government has announced the proposal to have the caste senses at national capacity, Rahul Gandhi had a set of demands. 

•⁠ ⁠We will ensure they conduct a comprehensive and consultative census – a people’s census, not a bureaucratic census 

•⁠ ⁠We will continue to press for the removal of the arbitrary 50% cap on reservations

•⁠ ⁠We will make sure they implement a central law for SC/ST Sub-plan and guarantee budget allocations 

• We will ensure Article 15(5) of the Constitution which promises reservation in private education is fully enacted

These are the demands that were placed in front of the NDA led the central government by Rahul Gandhi and he is demanding the Modi government to strictly adhere with the same.
