Chandrababu Naidu has strongly criticized BRS accusing its leaders of running a smear campaign against AP Govt. Speaking at the Mahanadu event after being re-elected as party president, Chandrababu addressed the much-talked-about Banakacharla project in Kurnool district.
He explained that the goal of this massive project is to divert Godavari river water through the Polavaram project, store it at Banakacharla, and use it to benefit the people of Kurnool and the broader Rayalaseema region. He revealed that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is already prepared and that several rounds of talks with the central government have taken place. Approvals are expected soon.
However, Chandrababu expressed disappointment that BRS leaders are allegedly spreading misinformation about the project. “When Godavari water is going to waste by flowing into the sea, we’re trying to use it for the benefit of our people. What’s wrong with that? Why are they trying to obstruct it?” he questioned.
He made it clear that the Banakacharla project would not harm Telangana in any way and criticized the BRS for trying to mislead people. “I urge them to stop this false propaganda. Using water that would otherwise be lost to the sea is not a crime,” he said.
What’s the controversy?
The Andhra Pradesh government has proposed a major irrigation project at Banakacharla in Kurnool district, estimated to cost around ₹80,000 crore. However, the Telangana Congress government has already submitted objections to the Centre, arguing that it could pose a risk to their state’s water interests. Telangana CM Revanth Reddy has reportedly written to the Centre opposing the project, and several state ministers have also voiced resistance.
Meanwhile, BRS leader KTR had earlier accused CM Revanth Reddy of staying silent while AP advanced the Banakacharla project. Referring to these political exchanges, Chandrababu fired back at BRS leaders, urging them to stop politicizing a project aimed at public good.
