A shocking incident unfolded in the Supreme Court of India today when a senior lawyer allegedly tried to throw his shoe at Chief Justice of India, Justice BR Gavai, during a court hearing.
According to reports, the accused, identified as 71-year-old advocate Rakesh Kishore, entered the courtroom dressed in full lawyer attire. During the session, he suddenly removed his shoe and attempted to hurl it toward the CJI. The courtroom security personnel acted swiftly, restrained him, and escorted him out.
Eyewitnesses say that while being taken out, the lawyer shouted, “Sanatan ka apmaan nahi sahega Hindustan.” The incident reportedly stems from outrage over CJI Gavai’s earlier comments in a case related to the relocation of the Maha Vishnu temple in Madhya Pradesh, which had drawn criticism from some Hindu groups.
In response to the incident, the Bar Council of India immediately suspended the lawyer’s license and condemned his act as a serious breach of professional conduct.
Despite the chaos, Justice Gavai remained calm and composed. “We are not distracted by all this. These things do not affect me,” he said as court proceedings continued.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reacted strongly to the incident, stating that such behavior inside the country’s highest court is “unacceptable and disrespectful to the judiciary.” He urged citizens to express disagreement through lawful and democratic means, not through violence or disruption.
The shocking courtroom drama has now sparked nationwide debate over limits of protest, respect toward the judiciary, and the growing intolerance in public discourse.
