Good Move – No More Stopping At Toll Plazas

The Union Government of India is soon going to roll out an electronic toll system which enables commuters to have a hassle free experience while travelling on highways. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways on Thursday announced that the existing toll system will become obsolete in one year and an electronic system will be installed across all toll plazas throughout the country.

Gadkari made this news official during Lok Sabha Question Hour and also mentioned that there are currently 4,500 highway projects worth 10 lakh crore underway across the country. He stated that the new toll system has already been introduced at 10 locations and will be expanded nationwide within a year.

“This toll system will end. There will be no one to stop you in the name of toll. Within a year, an electronic toll collection will be implemented across the country,” said Gadkari in the house. The National Payments Corporation of India has developed the National Electronic Toll Collection program, which streamlines collection of toll fees using the existing FASTag interface.

Sources revealed that government is now going to combine Automatic Number Plate Recognition ( ANPR) with FASTag, so that there will be no need for vehicles stop for tolls. Those who do not have a valid FASTag may face penalties through e-challans. There will be no long queues and waiting time for vehicles to stop and pay the toll charges once the new system comes into effect. This is a good move to give a barrier free experience while undertaking long journeys on highways.
