Abuse of artificial intelligence can be a bane to society and can be detrimental to the public if misused. Besides offering so many advantages, AI brings equal number of disadvantages when it is not used with the right intention.
Once such alarming trend has been noticed recently with the creation of sexually explicit images of women without their consent using Elon Musk’s Grok on X platform.
Taking a strong objection to this indecent activity, Government of India has expressed deep concern and reprimanded X over the misuse of Grok AI. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on January 2 issued a notice to X Corp’s India compliance head, citing concerns over the misuse of its AI tool Grok to generate and circulate obscene and sexually explicit content.
Expressing grave concern, the government has reportedly raised a red flag and drew the attention of the company for not following the country’s laws and also sought an explanation along with information within 72 hours about technical details related to Grok’s actions.
“Grok AI developed by you and integrated and made available on the X platform, is being misused by users to create fake accounts to host, generate, publish or share obscene images or videos of women in a derogatory or vulgar manner in order to indecently denigrate them,” the IT Ministry said in the notice sent to the social media company’s chief compliance officer on Friday.
The government has also asked X to enforce the required AI guardrails, and submit a detailed Action Taken Report not later than 72 hours or risk losing its statutory immunity from legal liability. The government also warned that failure to comply with these directives may result in strict legal consequences against X platform, its responsible officers and the users on the platform who violate the law, without any further notice.
The company is yet to respond on the notice given by the government of India. The strongly worded letter came in the aftermath of a collective raise of voice by several politicians in the last two days.
