The financial capital of India, Mumbai has gone for its civic body poles as the BMC elections counting was held earlier in the day today. As expected, it is the ruling NDA-backed Mahayuti alliance which has swept the polls.
The Mahayuti alliance crossed the 114-seat majority in the 227-member Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, with BJP leading in about 88 wards and Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena adding over 30, totaling nearly 120 seats.
This sweep extended across 29 corporations statewide, including strong showings in Pune, Nagpur, and Thane, while Shiv Sena (UBT) and allies managed 70-85 combined. The reunion of Thackeray brothers Uddhav and Raj didn’t prove to be sufficient enough for the municipal elections.
Interestingly enough, Hyderabad’s AIMIM led by Asaduddin Owaisi has also had a strong impact in the Mumbai municipal elections.
As per the latest figures, the party secured the election of 95 corporators in 13 municipal bodies, its best-ever performance in Maharashtra’s local governance.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called it a vote for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s development vision, as residents hope for better roads, less traffic, and cleaner governance.
