Former Andhra Pradesh CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has given clarity on his plan to take up another padayatra. The aim, he said, is to stay close to the people and reconnect with them before the next elections.
Speaking at a meeting at the YSRCP central office in Tadepalli, Jagan said he will start the padayatra after about one and a half years. Once it begins, he plans to spend nearly the same amount of time travelling among the public and meeting people directly.
He also said that from now on, he will meet party workers from one Assembly constituency every week. This move is meant to strengthen the party at the grassroots level after the election defeat.
Jagan pointed out that almost two years of the current government’s term have already passed. He said only two more budgets are left and that the government effectively has around three years remaining. His comments showed that the party has started preparing early for the next elections.
YSRCP leaders had earlier said that the padayatra may take place around 2027 and could continue for nearly two years. The plan appears to be to keep Jagan continuously among the people until the next elections.
After losing power, the party has stayed away from the Assembly and has not played a strong opposition role. The party claims that opposition voices are being suppressed. Political observers feel Jagan is hoping the padayatra will energise party workers and help regain public support.
However, it is still unclear whether the padayatra will benefit him politically. Jagan is also facing corruption-related cases, and his opponents are eagerly waiting for action against him in those cases.
Overall, the next year is expected to be important for state politics, with Jagan proposed padayatra likely to draw attention.
