PM Narendra Modi, in the 130th episode of his popular radio programme Mann Ki Baat, highlighted a heartening story from Andhra Pradesh’s Anantapur, a region long troubled by severe drought and water scarcity. Anantapur’s soil is mostly red and sandy, and for many years the area struggled with little rainfall and deep water shortages. Local families often faced days without enough water for drinking, farming or daily needs.
The PM praised the collective efforts of the people of Anantapur, working with their local administration to tackle this challenge head-on. Under a community-led push known as the ‘Ananta Neeru Samrakshana Project’, villagers cleaned up their water reservoirs and began restoring them. More than 10 reservoirs have been brought back to life, helping hold rainwater and bring much-needed water back into the local system.
Alongside this work, local residents also planted over 7,000 trees, which not only make the land greener but also help improve soil health and support water retention, essential especially during dry seasons. Communities took part with a strong sense of duty and collective responsibility.
Modi shared this story to show how ordinary citizens working together can solve big problems and reminded listeners that small local actions like cleaning reservoirs, protecting water, and planting trees add up to a big change.
This approach of teamwork and innovation can help other parts of India that face similar dry conditions. The message was simple: when people take responsibility and work together, water scarcity and any other lingering issue can be fought and quality of life can be improved for entire communities.
