As we had reported earlier, the government of Andhra Pradesh has been contemplating the proposal of restricting children under 16 years from using social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and others.
IT Minister Lokesh had been extensively discussing this matter and had even announced the idea of imposing the social media ban for kids under 16 at the cabinet meeting recently.
This is now followed by a pretty significant development as Telugu Desam party MP Lavu Krishnadevarayulu has brought up this topic in the Parliament yesterday.
The young Telugu Desam party MP brought up the proposal of banning children under 16 on social media while addressing the Parliament House today and this is going to start an interesting discussion soon.
“There’s the urgent need for a national policy imposing age-based restrictions, including a prohibition on social media access for children below 16 years.
Unregulated platforms expose children to serious online risks, thereby increasing their vulnerability to online harms. With Andhra Pradesh examining a strong legal framework, it is time for a uniform national approach to safeguard children’s digital safety.” He stated.
The Andhra Pradesh government has already initiated talks with leading social media platforms to impose this restriction on underage children. And now the Telugu Desam MP has brought up the topic at the Parliament discussions, and it could soon become an India wide proposal.
It is good to see the Telugu Desam party, leading the charge in a crucial fight that could shape of the society in the days to follow if implemented well.
