The Andhra Pradesh Budget Sessions began today with Governor Abdul Nazeer addressing the Assembly. As expected, former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and YCP members attended the session.
However, their presence inside the House lasted less than 10 minutes. Soon after taking their seats, YCP MLAs began raising slogans demanding recognition as the official opposition. They also alleged that law and order in the state has weakened and tried to interrupt the Governor’s speech.
Members from TDP, Jana Sena and BJP appealed to them to respect the Governor’s address and maintain decorum, but the protests continued. YCP members later staged a walkout, citing issues such as the alleged adulteration of ghee in laddu and concerns over medical colleges under the PPP model.
Outside the Assembly as well, Jagan and other YCP legislators held placards and banners, repeating their demand for opposition status and accusing the government of not allowing them to raise public issues.
Meanwhile, Speaker Ayyanna Patrudu has introduced a digital attendance system for the first time in Assembly history. In the past, members could simply sign the attendance register and leave. Now, with facial recognition based digital tracking, attendance will be counted only if a member is physically present inside the House and seated.
Assembly officials have informed MLAs that the manual register system has been discontinued. With the new rule in place, members must remain inside the Assembly for their attendance to be recorded.
Today’s developments made it clear that while Jagan and YCP marked their presence, their stay in the House was brief and marked by protest rather than participation.
