IT Minister Lokesh has been very active on Twitter since taking power and has openly bashed his critics and neighboring states over their policies and actions. As a result, he has been at the forefront of attacking Karnataka and pitching Andhra as better for investors, which has angered many Karnataka ministers and citizens over his comments and tweets.
Now, Nara Lokesh has again sparked mild discussion on social media after reacting to a policy announcement from Karnataka regarding restrictions on social media use by children. CM Siddaramaiah announced that children under 16 would be banned from using social media platforms. The proposal was presented as a step to reduce the negative effects of excessive mobile phone usage among young people.
Responding to this news, Lokesh tweeted, “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.” This was a satirical message to Karnataka’s state administration, suggesting they copied an Andhra government policy idea previously proposed in Andhra Pradesh and he added that he was glad to see Karnataka considering it. Lokesh also wished the state success in implementing the measure.
Some felt the remark was an unnecessary dig at Karnataka, especially since the issue involves children’s digital well-being and is a good policy for everyone, regardless of which state implements it. Critics argued that such comments may not have been required and that the development could simply have been welcomed without namecalling each other and could have rather insisted on how both states can work together to make this as a single policy implemented across the nation
Despite the tweet ultimately having a positive message, political observers say such exchanges are common in today’s social media-driven politics, where leaders often highlight their earlier initiatives, driven by emotion, when similar policies appear elsewhere. However, the reality is that the AP government itself adopted this social ban policy from Australia and other countries worldwide.
Clearly, Lokesh should have avoided such satirical political remarks as the discussion once again shows how even small comments on social media can quickly become a topic of debate in the political space.
