Can Amaravati Be Changed Again? Reality Check Inside!

Lok Sabha passed the Amendment to AP Reorganization Act with a Voice Note. Except for YSR Congress, all the Parties supported Amaravati. On expected lines, YSR Congress MPs confined to saying Amaravati is untenable, Corruption, etc.

Meanwhile, Jagan Mohan Reddy called for a Pressmeet at the same time and dropped indirect hints that he would change the Capital if voted to Power again.

Towards the end of the Pressmeet, a Journalist asked Jagan directly about the same. He said,” రామాయణం అంతా విని రాముడికి సీత ఏమవుతుంది అని అడుగుతున్నావ్”.

In his Pressmeet, Jagan also tried to downplay the Amendment to the Reorganization Act. “Chandrababu is saying that they are bringing this Amendment to make sure no one can change the Capital in future. If the Assembly can make sure the Capital is not changed, the same Assembly can change it in future,” he said.

Jagan seems to have not understood the matter clearly. AP Assembly did not make any changes to the Capital. It only passed a Resolution asking the Central to include Amaravati as the Capital.

The Parliament can only do that. Also, Parliament will not accept all resolutions that are sent by the State Assembly. Previously, Erstwhile Andhra Pradesh Assembly sent a Resolution about the Telangana State but that did not happen then.

There are at least three resolutions sent asking the Center to continue SC Status to Dalits even if they are converted to Christianity. But the Center did not do that.

Some say the Center will oblige if the next Government is dependent on YSR Congress Numbers. The Parliament will not touch such sensitive subjects without the consensus of all Parties. That is because if passed so easily, wrong precedents will be set for the other states.

Capital is a very big issue. Except for YSR Congress, all Parties Supported Amaravati in Lok Sabha. They would not change their Stance for no reason. 

In short, the Parliament can amend the Reorganization Act even in future but it would not do. After all, it is not a child’s play to change a Capital every five years.
