One of the principal promises made by the NDA government and Andhra Pradesh to leading investors is that they would do everything in their power facilitate big companies that are looking to invest in the state.
This is on display if you look at the fact that the Google Data centre that is coming up in Vizag has managed to secure a crucial power grant weeks before the start of the construction process.
Going into the story, Google needed a massive power distribution license in order to operate the one giga data Centre in Vizag, which happens to be one of the biggest data centres anywhere in the world.
With such huge scale of operations, going to commence here soon, there was this need to secure a DISCOM power connection that is rarely accorded to private companies. However, the Andhra Pradesh cabinet had to make the exception for Google, considering the scale of the investment and potential outcomes.
Subsequently, the cabinet approved the issuance of power license to Google on Friday, which would essentially mean that the company can directly procure power from power companies and distribute it to the data Centre here. This will mean that the company will not be a consumer of Electricity, but instead a distributor, which is very rare for a private company.
Chandrababu government made this exemption for Google to maintain the goodwill with the company and set a strong precedent to other companies that the government is ready to make such exceptions for big scale investments.
If other companies look at the operational support that is provided by the government, it could very well invite them to set up in AP with full cooperation from the government. This could be a game changer if this model reaches the deeper corridors of the tech industry.
In the meanwhile, Google is said to start the construction of the data centre in Vizag on April 28 and this will mark the start of a new chapter in AP’s tech sector.
