Hit-and-Run Tragedy: 28-Year-Old Medico Priyanka Dies

In an utterly shocking and heartbreaking tragedy that has shaken the Telugu states and the nation, a promising young medico who was hit by a car in a hit-and-run incident outside a busy mall in Rajahmundry on August 3 has finally breathed her last after battling for her life for several days. Doctors at a Hyderabad hospital declared her dead on Sunday.

Dr Kanike Priyanka, a 28-year-old postgraduate medical student at GSL Medical College, succumbed to her injuries at KIMS Hospital in Secunderabad on Sunday, August 9, after fighting for her life for nearly a week. Priyanka was critically injured in the incident near Prasad Aditya Mall in Rajamahendravaram on August 3. She was travelling as a pillion rider on a two-wheeler with a friend when the tragedy occurred.

According to the police, two youths who were allegedly under the influence of alcohol had an altercation with security personnel at the mall. They later drove away recklessly and allegedly rammed their car into the two-wheeler carrying Priyanka.

The car reportedly hit the two-wheeler multiple times, causing Priyanka to fall and suffer severe head injuries. Police said the accused allegedly struck her three times with the car.

She was initially taken to a hospital in Rajahmundry and was later shifted to KIMS Hospital in Secunderabad for advanced treatment as her condition remained critical.

Doctors battled to save her, but her injuries were severe. She was subsequently declared brain-dead before doctors confirmed her death on Sunday afternoon. Amid their immense grief, her family also agreed to donate her organs, giving hope and a new lease of life to others.

Priyanka was pursuing her postgraduate medical education and had a promising future ahead of her. For her family and friends, the dreams and hopes of a young doctor building her career have now been replaced by an unbearable loss.

The incident has sparked anger over reckless and drunk driving and the devastating consequences it can have on innocent lives.

East Godavari SP D Narasimha Kishore said the accused allegedly hit Priyanka with the car three times. Police have registered an attempt-to-murder case against the accused and are taking further action.

What began as an ordinary day for a young doctor with dreams of serving people ended in a heartbreaking tragedy. Priyanka could not be saved, but through her family’s decision to donate her organs, a part of her may continue to live on in others.

Priyanka’s death is not just another road accident. It is a painful reminder of how one moment of reckless driving can destroy an entire family and cut short a young life filled with promise.
