Former Andhra Pradesh CM Ys Jagan, who is known for his aggressive political style and mass appeal, found himself in an unusual situation during his visit to Pulivendula for the municipal elections. The YCP chief faced protests and several hurdles during the visit, which soon turned into a heated political episode.
Jagan’s visit to Pulivendula during the municipal elections on November 1 turned into a tense political episode. The former CM faced protests from Dastagiri, an approver in the YS Viveka murder case, who confronted him over the case and made serious allegations against him.
Soon after, Jagan accused the ruling TDP of preventing YCP polling agents from entering booths. He claimed that his party had 80 agents, but they were allowed into only 10 polling stations, while the remaining 70 were allegedly kept out. He also alleged that TDP workers were resorting to rigging with the support of the police.
Jagan then went to the Returning Officer’s office to complain about the alleged irregularities. However, officials did not allow him inside. He staged a sit-in protest outside the office along with party workers and affected polling agents, demanding immediate action.
The situation became more heated when Jagan spoke about the alleged attacks on his party workers. He said that his supporters were capable of retaliating if he gave the green signal, but claimed that he did not want them to resort to violence. He said his party was trying to protect democracy through peaceful means.
He also questioned how elections could be conducted without opposition polling agents at the booths. He accused Chief Minister Chandrababu of failing to ensure a fair election and alleged that the ruling party was using its influence to manipulate the polling process.
The YSRCP chief demanded repolling in Pulivendula, alleging that the election process had been compromised. He also said that his party would approach the courts and fight the matter through legal means.
In a significant development, Jagan announced that he would not cast his vote under the prevailing circumstances. He later left Pulivendula without voting, saying that casting his vote would amount to accepting the way polling had been conducted.
Meanwhile, the TDP rejected the YSRCP’s allegations and accused Jagan’s party of creating tension during the municipal elections. The rival claims added to the political heat around the Pulivendula polls, with the Ycp continuing to demand repolling.
