The government of India is being severely criticized in international media for the poor handling of the coronavirus pandemic in the country. In order to present their own version of news in the international sector, the government is planning to launch a new BBC-like channel which will broadcast targeting international viewers.
The state-owned broadcasting firm Doordarshan is all set to establish this new channel, which likely to be named Doordarshan International. Earlier, DD launched a similar channel under the name of DD World, but eventually, it was renamed DD India in 2019. Doordarshan’s parent body, Prasar Bharati floated an Expression of Interest draft (EoI), inviting the comments of private firms.
The sources claimed that Prasar Bharati is planning to hire a private firm to make a roadmap and Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this channel as the government doesn’t have prior experience in running an international channel. Various international firms which have experience of working on global channels are in talks with Prasar Bharati right now.
We have to see how far will this plan help the Modi government in building a soft image in international media.
