In a meeting reviewed on Saturday regarding the new updates on coronavirus in the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed a somewhat better Covid situation. He also expressed that the rate of vaccination is quite satisfying but called for the outreach to be widened with the help of NGOs.
A statement from PMO reads – “Officials gave a detailed presentation to the PM on the progress of vaccination in the country. PM was briefed about the age-wise vaccination coverage and the vaccine coverage among healthcare workers, frontline workers and general population in various states”.
However, the meeting was held just when concerns are once again skyrocketing over the Delta Plus variant cases in the country, besides the predicting third wave. More than half of the population in India are yet to be vaccinated and the new variants are worrisome. Only about 5.6 per cent of India’s adult population of 95 crores has received two doses.
To date, India has reported 50 plus cases of Delta Plus and currently, experts are researching the effectiveness of existing vaccines against the variant. The PMO further added that “PM was informed that 3.77 crore doses have been administered in the last six days which is more than the entire population of countries like Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and Canada”.
So far, 128 districts in the country have vaccinated more than 50 per cent of the 45+ population and 16 districts have vaccinated more than 90 per cent of the 45+ population. This made the PM content over the pace of vaccinations this week. Besides, he stressed the point that it is important to carry this momentum forward. Modi further spoke with several NGOs for their involvement in bringing efforts to a fast pace in the future. The Prime Minister also asked officers to make sure that the pace of testing does not go down, which he believes to be a vital tool in tracking the infection.
