Young cricket Sam Curran joined Punjab Kings who got auctioned for a staggering amount of ₹18.50 CR. He surpassed the record of Chris Morris, who was bought by Rajasthan Royals for ₹16.25 CR in the IPL mini-auction. Curran carries the record of being named the ‘Player of the Tournament’ following his record number of wickets in the T20 World Cup 2022.
“I’ve been in previous auctions (as well); you go in with your base price. I’ll be watching (the auction) on TV. On Friday morning, I guess, when your name comes up, you just say ‘keep the paddle up there’,” Curran said in a video posted by ‘The Telegraph. His base price of ₹2 CR was crossed within a minute and the price reached around ₹12 CR.
A fierce war of bidding took place between Rajasthan Royals – Mumbai Indians – Chennai Super Kings – Punjab Kings. While Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals stepped back when the bidding reached ₹15 CR, Punjab Kings – Chennai Super Kings continued their bidding war.
As soon as the bid reached ₹16 CR, Lucknow Super Giants jumped in and finally, Punjab Kings welcomed Sam Curran at ₹18.50 CR, making him the most expensive player in the history of IPL.
