One of the most detrimental developments in Indian cricket happened with the departure of Virat Kohli from the test format as he announced his retirement today. This comes just days after captain Rohit Sharma had also announced his retirement from the format.
What this essentially means is that team India will be without the services of both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma henceforth. This is the most significant change of personnel that happened with Indian cricket in recent years, and this transition is not going to be a smooth one.
Kohli and Rohit have been two of the hallmark players for India over the years, and in particular Kohli was exuberantly outstanding in the test format.
The kind of legacy that Kohli had built for himself with his spellbinding innings against top teams like Australia, England, and South Africa made him the true “King Kohli”. It really needs to be said that India and quite possibly the world will never see another test player like Virat Kohli.
To some degree, even Rohit Sharma had been very successful in the test format between 2021 to 23.
Due to combine efforts of Rohit and Kohli, the Indian test team overcome significant challenges against top teams and make it to the WTC final twice in a row, albeit not losing on both occasions.
And now that both Kohli and Rohit are not a part of the test format, it has to be seen how India will transition from this crucial stage. There are reports that Shubman Gill will be the next captain for the test format. But his own form has been questionable in the longer format of the game.
Kohli and Rohit were polar minded players but this combination still worked wonderfully. We have to wait and see if the next generation of Indian test cricketer have the kind of skill and character to replicate the heroic of these two legendary players.
Jaspreet Bumrah is going to be a crucial part of this set up as he is well and truly the very best bowler in the world at the moment. He is going to be an integral part of this rebuilding process as India moves on from two of its loved heroes.
