IPL 2026: Are Captains The Biggest Problem Now?

IPL 2026 has completed a crucial phase as almost all the teams have played at least four games till now and the point table is becoming increasingly clear. And now the discussion has started about the kind of efficiency that is being displayed by certain captains.

When it comes to leading team like Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, they are facing a very peculiar situation with regard to their captains. Hardik Pandya and Ruturaj Gaikwad had not been in good form and the fact that they’ve taken over from legends like Rohit Sharma and Dhoni have crushed the expectations.

Neither of these players appear to have the full trust and respect of their respective teams and that’s a dangerous sign.

But the exact opposite is the case with Royal Challengers Bengaluru. After years of uncertainty and underperformance, RCB finally won the cup last year thanks to Rajat Patidar, who took over as the captain. Ever since he has been exceptional with the bat and is also delivering good results.

Shreyas Iyer has been a remarkable captain, not just for KKR but also for his new team, Punjab Kings. He took them to the finals last year and currently on a similar path this year as well. He is excellent as a captain, and also as a player.

KKR is facing an extremely challenging situation as they have not won a single game till now. Their captain Ajinkya Rahane is an outdated player and the results are showing. Lucknow is facing a similar situation with Rishabh Pant, who has been on and off.

Delhi Capitals have Axar Patel as the captain and he is a mixed bag as well. He is a decent bowler and batsman but might not be categorised as a match winner. In the case of Gujarat Titans, which has been one of the most consistent teams in the IPL, they have also been undergoing slump now. Captain Shubhman Gill is doing an alright job but he’s not at his consistent best.

Rajasthan Royals have been very consistent this year and their new captain Riyan Parag, despite minimal contribution as a player has been able to deliver the results with his captaincy. Sunrisers Hyderabad are awaiting the return of their full-time captain Pat Cummins. Stand-in captain Ishan Kishan is an alright replacement but the results are lacking.
