2,340 kg Of Jewels Brought Back To India

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday brought back from Hong Kong 2,340 kg of polished diamonds, pearls and silver jewellery, costing Rs 1,350 crore in the open market, seized from shops owned by fugitive diamantaires Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi.

The valuables were brought back from Hong Kong to Mumbai in 108 consignments, including 32 belonging to units controlled by Nirav and remaining to those owned by Choksi.

The ED officials said that valuation and seizure formalities are in progress.

In early 2018, these consignments had been sent to Hong Kong from Dubai and the ED officials caught wind of the valuables in July 2018. The ED officials could bring back he valuables after holding discussions with the Hong Kong authorities about the legal formalities.

Earlier, the ED had successfully brought back 33 consignments of valuables from Dubai and Hong Kong in Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi case. On arrival of these consignments, the valuables were assessed by independent valuers and the diamonds were said to be worth Rs 137 crore, the ED officials reminded.
