#AfghanCrisis: Biryani prices soar in Hyd

The Hyderabadi Biryani is world famous and every day thousands of people relish this lip-smacking dish. There are hundreds of restaurants in the twin cities that serve different varieties of Biryani and during the weekend, the sales touch sky. Hyderabad being the most affordable city in India, Biryani prices were reasonable irrespective of the fuel prices hike.

However, to the rude shock of Biryani lovers in Hyderabad, the prices have gone up remarkably high in the last two weeks. This is mainly attributed to the crisis in Afghanistan which was taken over by the Taliban. Apparently Hyderabad houses Afghan traders who supply whole/raw spices such as Shahi Jeera, Anzeer, Black Apricot, Green Apricot and others that are used in Biryani making.

The supply of these spices has stopped ever since Talibans occupied Afghanistan and as a result the demand for the spices has gone up. The restaurant owners are finding it hard to get the whole spices from other markets due to shortage in supply and high prices. This has forced the restaurant owners of Hyderabad to hike the prices of Biryani.

Earlier a single Chicken Biryani would cost around Rs 250 and now the price is at Rs 350. Likewise the family pack price which was supposed to be Rs 600, is now being sold at Rs 700.

The restaurant owners and spice traders say that the prices may go up even further in the coming days depending upon the political developments in Afghanistan. Well, that’s bad news for Biryani lovers!
