India has been elected unopposed as non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for a term period of two years from January 2021 to December 2022.
India won the UN Security Council elections held on June 17th with 184 votes in the 193-member General Assembly. Along with India, Ireland, Mexico and Norway have also become the non-permanent members.
This is for the eighth time that India got elected as non-permanent member and now will get a chance to sit with five permanent members China, France, Russia, UK and the USA which is a 15-member Security Council.
Shortly after this PM Narendra Modi tweeted, “Deeply grateful for the overwhelming support shown by the global community for India’s membership of the @UN Security Council. India will work with all member countries to promote global peace, security, resilience and equity.”
However, India has been pitching for a permanent member status but the likes of China and its allies are opposing this move despite severe efforts.
