Over 12 family members of Mohanbhai Kundaria, BJP MP from Rajkot, died in the collapse of the suspension bridge at Morbi in Gujarat on Sunday. The death toll increased to 132, Gujarat Home Minister Harsha Sanghavi said on Monday.

The personal assistant of the BJP MP said that 12 members of Kundaria’s family, including 5 children, died in the bridge collapse incident.

On information about the incident, Kundaria visited the place and took stock of rescue operations.

He said that it was very saddening. There is a lot of silt and machines are being used to pump out water to figure out the deceased. “I believe the bridge got overloaded leading to the tragic incident,” he said.

The government said that a high-powered committee was constituted to investigate into the cause of the suspension bridge collapse at Morbi. A criminal case has also been filed in connection with the incident, Sanghavi said.

Investigation into the incident has begun under the supervision of Range IGP. Over 200 personnel including the Navy, NDRF and Army arrived at the spot last night and have been working continuously in the rescue operations, the minister said.

All three defense services have deployed their personnel in the search operations. Apart from them, three Indian Coast Guard teams comprising divers, equipment, boats and other material have been deployed at the bridge since last night, the defense officials said.
