Tesla is recalling more than 2 million of its cars on the US roads. The said two million Tesla owners will begin receiving over-the-air software updates as a result of a recall due to the vehicles’ autopilot feature.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the recall Wednesday, impacting cars across the automaker’s lineup from model years 2012-23. The investigation by the government agency started two years ago into the 11 incidents involving ‘stationary first-responder vehicles and Tesla vehicles that were operating with Autosteer engaged.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Autopilot system can give drivers a false sense of security and be easily misused in dangerous situations when a Tesla’s technology may be unable to safely navigate the road.
The new update will give Tesla drivers more warning when they are not paying attention to the road while on ‘Autosteer’. Tesla agreed to the software update starting on Tuesday that will limit the use of the Autosteer feature if a driver repeatedly fails to demonstrate to resume the control of the car while the feature is on.
