A New Year would make Indore a beggar-free city. The district authorities have decided to initiate strict measures to achieve the goal.
Residents found giving alms to beggars will face legal action. From January 1, 2025, FIR would be filed against those giving alms to beggars.
District Collector Ashish Singh, addressing a media meet, said that an awareness campaign will be run throughout December to inform the residents about the new rules.
“Till the end of this month, the campaign will be carried out. From January 1, FIR will be registered against those giving alms to beggars,” he said.
In the awareness campaigns, the administration is informing the citizens about the negative impact of begging on the society. Singh urged the residents not to become partners in the sin by giving alms to the people.
At the same time, the authorities have busted gangs involved in begging. The officials also took measures to rehabilitate the individuals forced into begging.
The decision by the district authorities to ban begging in Indore has been taken, as part of a pilot project being implemented by the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
The project is aimed at making 10 cities in the country beggar-free, including Indore among the chosen cities.
The other cities where the project would be implemented include Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna and Ahmedabad.
